Set up an extension ladder using the 4:1 ratio: for every four feet of length, the base must be one foot out from the wall to ensure a safe 75-degree angle
Do not stand above the indicated safe point on the ladder
Do not stand on the top step or the top cap of a stepladder - you can lose your balance
Do not straddle a stepladder by standing on the paint tray
Store ladders where they are protected from the elements
Do not expose ladders to corrosive substances or to excessive heat or moisture
Hang ladders horizontally on racks that have support points every 6' (2m) to prevent sagging
